IRVINGTON, NJ — South Ward Councilwoman Sandy Jones is set to host her 11th annual Halloween Party at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School on Clinton Avenue on Saturday, Oct. 31, from noon to 4 p.m.
And Officer Sheyla Marquez and the Irvington Police Department are going to be hosting their own annual Halloween Extravaganza outside Police and Fire Headquarters in Civic Square on the same day, starting at 3 p.m., so there will be double the fun, scares, costumes, tricks and treats for children and their parents in town this year.
“This is our 11th one and we’re going to be at Thurgood Marshall,” Jones said Tuesday, Oct. 20. “It’s going to be fun. We’ve got Uncle Magic, cotton candy, hot dogs, gift giveaways and a lot of stuff.”
Jones said this year’s party at Thurgood Marshall would be the first community event she has hosted at that venue.
“It’s going to be a little piece of local history,” Jones said. “I never gave anything over at Thurgood Marshall, which I should have, since it is a part of the South Ward. I’m going to try to go to each of the schools over the next few years, because I want to have touched every school before I’m done on the council.”
Jones added that she has held other Halloween parties in different venues previously, and said that Mayor Tony Vauss is partnering with her to host this year’s event as part of his effort to host a community-oriented event in every township ward, so this year’s installment of her Halloween Party would probably be bigger than past years, thanks to the mayor’s involvement.
Jones said she hopes everyone in town, not just her South Ward constituents and their families, will come out to the party, and don’t have to bring anything except themselves and their children.
“It’s all about children and families. We do have a lot of toys. Kids like giveaways. We’ll be having a dance contest and a best costume contest. It’s going to be nice.”
