IRVINGTON, NJ — The Irvington NAACP hosted its annual Freedom Fund Banquet on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. in the B.F. Johnson Center of Metropolitan Baptist Church and, according to Irvington NAACP President Merrick Harris, it was a successful event.

“It turned out pretty good,” Harris said Tuesday, Oct. 6. “We honored the Golden Knight football team and cheerleading squad. Kenneth Steele, better known as ‘Doc,’ accepted the football team’s award and Lil Walker accepted the award for the cheerleaders. Our guest speaker was Marieta Short, the representative for the National Organization for Women. And we had Earl Amin as one of our guest speakers.”

Harris said Amin and his personal journey in life might not be known to many, but it is a very interesting story, nonetheless, adding that it is instructive for those interested in criminal justice, prisoner sentencing and convictions, and prisoner-reentry issues.

“Earl Amin is a person that was previously incarcerated for 30 years,” Harris said. “He said that he didn’t rob the bank but was convicted of the conspiracy to rob a bank and they gave him 30 years. Both speakers were pretty good and we had a pretty good turnout.”
